If I got your question right, then that's easily done:
With function "Add Tension" active, Liquid Notes will produce additional notes. So for instance, when you change a simple Cmaj for a Cmaj7(9), you will then hear C-E-G-B-D.
"Add Tension" may be applied to any track in the piece, also more than just one. With chord tracks the effect will come out best.

I will do a vid about it as soon as i have time (couple of days)- just explored it and think it deserves some attention

I'm sincerely curious why aren't more people interested in this kind of software.

I mean there is no ego-bruising especially if you know what you are already doing (like swedrian showed us).

I just find it rather strange in a forum where people have no problem (to put it mildly) to get a gear that puts "magic mojo" on their tracks.. but they have a problem (like in the previous pages) with a software that aids inspiration and composition..

No baiting... just curious from a psychological point of view.

I agree there is definitely a need for more midi composition tools like this. If the price indicates the R&D for this type of product that might be the reason there isn't as many options available already.

Is there anything similar at all? I'm also in the boat "cloud - no go". My studio computer is offline and although I do a lot of composing on the road, insane roaming fees don't help there either.

This is a somewhat new territory so this means there isn't a lot to build upon.

So this means they have to start from scratch and that always costs.

Anyway I think this is a great first tool...

I think if you really need this kind of tool the cloud operation wouldn't bother you that much. If you live or work remotely you can always have a small modem.

I imagine it wouldn't cost that much for the amount of data exchange needed.

As long as it protects their investment and allows them to make more great software I understand why they chose to go on the cloud path.
Hopefully going on a cloud based system means less piracy and less support costs.

And really I can't think of a single software that does what this thing does...

I stumbled upon this article on their site that for me personally was helpful in clearing some of the misconceptions regarding a tool like this:

Think of the usual creative workflow: It's not a straightforward process. You only start with a few chunks of musical data first, which can easily be handled in Liquid Notes only. Then, after transferring the files to your DAW, you start using virtual instruments and step by step keep expanding your piece by adding different new elements.

Maybe you'll only need Liquid Notes to help you with a harmonic progression completely out of rhythm in the beginning, which you'll then re-import into the DAW and do all the musical fine tuning there. I was thinking that if the program could output a channel (separate) of just the chord progression with say some fine tuning option to choose how big the chords are (eg 5,6+ keys).

Sometime if you are working with a arrangement that only has 2-3 parts of melodies you will still be stuck up for choosing the backing chords. You may not be able to define the true sound of the Chord while only hearing 2-3 melody parts

The 'add tension' aspect is cool though, which works great on chord tracks.

not to rain on the parade here, (this software is a cool idea, and may have some educational value for budding young composers), but i can't see any viable market for it, especially at the suggested price point!

- there's no pro level composer anywhere that's gonna take the time to export midi files, then wait for a piece of software to make chordal suggestions on a remote server somewhere !, and then re-import the software's ideas into their sequencer! it's a cumbersome process that would destroy workflow for most: any self-respecting composer could just play/program/audition variations in a few seconds/minutes if they wanted to make changes to their composition. (and what happens if you like the changes!? do you credit the remote server in the liner notes, and split the royalty cheque with it? )

- singer/songwriter types that may be interested in spicing up their harmony are generally pretty few and far between, and the ones that are, already have the ears/chops to do it on their own. it's much more about the words and melodies with that crowd anyway. also the vast majority are far more comfortable writing with a guitar in their hand or a piano in front of them: not in front of a DAW with an active internet connection!

- DJs!? interested in paying money to achieve more complex harmony !? that's a rare and elusive beast if ever i heard of one! (i'll call national geographic to do an in-depth feature when you find one...)

- bedroom prodoocerz... maybe, but they'll all wait for the crack!

sorry, i hope i'm not coming across as a jerk here, just pointing out a few serious flaws that should have been discussed in the "business plan" stage of this endeavor. if this software was re-purposed as a tablet and/or iphone app and sold for $4.99 it would make total sense as a fun/cool educational tool... and those devices are always connected to the network: many DAWs are not.

IMHO you have some serious re-tooling to do with this product.

Thanks for your post! I agree with you. With most of your points you're stating the obvious. And that's not at all what we intended Liquid Notes for.

One technical correction here: real-time reharmonization doesn't require online calculations, only the initial harmony analysis does, and only once. We have previously posted explanations why we can't take the analysis algorithms offline.

More complex harmony doesn't necessarily mean conventional harmony from a traditional point of view. Add gradual changes over time, throw in a few "complexity elements" here and there and voilà, you've also raised the level of experience for the listener. DJ's do love that. That's how their music works ideally. Time to call National Geographic!

So Liquid Notes is more about computer power and interactivity. For instance, think of a trance piece with 500+ bars of 50+ voices. You're looking for minor harmonic changes but interesting ones that'll keep the track spicy. With Liquid Notes that's done with only a few clicks. It will instantaneously adjust all voices to the new harmony environment. The DAW I/O should remain a side issue.

Presentations of multiple versions on the fly become simple, too. I'm picturing a situation in the studio with clients present and a lot of time pressure on your shoulders.

What hasn't been stressed enough is another live aspect of the software: polyphonic live improv and melody correction. We haven't featured these aspects in our communication yet. We're taking one step after the next.

You've definitely thrown in some interesting thoughts. Products like this will remain in the process of improvement, and we're constantly re-evaluating our strategies with music professionals.

cheers stefan, i love that there's smart people out there making software that promotes the importance of thick/rich/juicy/interesting harmony! regardless of whether or not it becomes a bestseller, it's cool that you guys are developing this.

Anyways I'm still interested in this product, although I'm over the trail period I to choose to buy it now, I'm not entirely convinced it did/does what I'm after well enough. Much of the time I didn't notice it 'correcting' any of my harmonies, but it was useful for changing chords that is true.

I also didn't get into the live use of the program.... The price is steep, for IMO those who are actual composers take their work very seriously, even writing scores of the music for sight reading...

I think if there was a good sale I'd buy it up, but I'm not convinced it's not abandon-ware. But I still think it's useful, that's why I'm still interested...

This software is really something out-of-the box. Once you figure it, it became a very usefull tool when inspiration is not on your side. The wonderland would be an Ipad version!

Purpose and advantage of the instrument library
The instrument library includes a satisfying amount of basic instruments, ranging from percussion to bass, leads, pads, mallets, classical instruments, and a variety of other sounds.

Here is an overview of the most important advantages:

• You are on the go and need to quickly improve your composition/production with Liquid Notes.

• You don't use sequencers but you still want to work on music.

I love that LN is getting better and better.

Will test further all the new features but from my initial feelings this update is really good. I'm so glad it's maturing and this only means it will be more and more used over here.

Before I had some rare hiccups that required restarting the SW but after testing the new version for some time there isn't any in sight.

Also the live improvisation works flawlessly now and is just amazing!

For the price on sale now it's an fantastic deal for anyone interested in composing better music using midi.

Before I was getting more and vsts doing the sameish VA sounds or libraries costing way more that this great SW but once I started to work with LN I got better and more diverse results with the tools I already had as it provided way more inspiration than just "new toy honeymoon".

Can't wait to see what LN becomes and what these guys do next

A major step forward, with a completely new UI

Only days ago we have released a major update of Liquid Notes which features a redesign of the user interface, additional features like a track view and single-track to multi-track import for Ableton Live users. And, best of all, you can now get Liquid Notes for the special price of $99.95 for a short period only at participating retailers!



Put all of the above together, this makes it the simplest solution to edit complex harmonic progressions for single-track or multi-track arrangements, and yet makes the theory of harmony fully accessible to the user.
